Diesel Mechanic

Role Mandate

  • To maintain mechanised harvesting equipment and ensure that all equipment is managed according to preventative maintenance schedule to ensure maximum uptimes.

Key Accountabilities

  • Plan, coordinate and perform preventative maintenance and services according to OEM (original machine manufacturer) specifications
  • Compare outside work delivered in order to realize value for money
  • Perform minor repairs on equipment and vehicles as per preventative maintenance schedule
  • Ensure planned preventative maintenance and service is adhered to during shift changes and weekly service
  • Ensure guide bar and chains are properly maintained
  • Calibrate harvester heads to ensure accurate log dimensions and value recovery
  • Manage daily vehicle inspection sheets and breakdown reports
  • Prioritise, coordinate and repair according to vehicle inspection sheets
  • Perform machine condition assessments
  • Plan preventative maintenance work during shut down period, to ensure machine uptime for the New Year
  • Conduct fault finding and troubleshooting on equipment
  • Determine possible reason for breakdowns and ensure loss time is kept to the minimum
  • Gather information and discuss with technical staff of OEM during major breakdowns
  • Coordinate and resolve breakdown depending on the complexity of breakdown in order to limit downtime
  • Manage breakdown registers in all harvesting equipment
  • Plan service to minimize loss of production time
  • Organize required oils and lubrication for planned service
  • Assist during actual service
  • Keep small inventory of critical spares, oils and lubrications
  • Schedule service truck for diesel refuelling
  • Calibrate dispensing units on service truck
  • Keep detailed records of all interventions per machine

Minimum Requirements

  • Qualified Artisan: Diesel and/ or Petrol Mechanic Trade Test
  • At least 2 years relevant experience
  • Knowledge of mechanised harvesting equipment will be advantageous
  • Auto electrical experience and hydraulic experience will be an added advantage
  • Valid driver’s license
